Oh no! What Should I do When my AC is Broken?

Eric McPherson • March 28, 2022

The worst thing that can happen to you in the summer heat is your air conditioning unit breaking down. It can be uncomfortable when a malfunctioned AC leaves your home hot and stuffy. Aside from this, an extremely warm space can also cause health issues such as heatstroke.

Has your AC broken down when you least expected it? Unfortunately, your AC unit will not alert you before it malfunctions. Here are some immediate steps to take to deal with the situation.

Leave the System Alone

The first thing that comes to mind when your AC malfunctions is to open the system up to see what is wrong with it. Unless you are a trained AC technician, leave the system alone. It may be risky for you to tamper with the unit.

It is advisable to wait for the air conditioning repair technician to ensure the system is repaired correctly.

Stay Cool and Keep Hydrated

Obviously, your home will be hot during an AC breakdown. Your priority is to keep yourself as comfortable as possible while you wait for the technician. If possible, use the opportunity to visit friends and family.

You can also go to the pool or spend time outdoors in a shaded area. Remember to wear breathable and light clothes. It is also important to drink a lot of water and make cold beverages for the entire family.

If you have a fan, this will be the best time to put it on. Avoid using machines and appliances that produce heat. Think about how hot your home gets when you bake even when your air conditioning unit is functioning; without the AC, the heat will be unbearable.

Apart from the oven, avoid other appliances such as the stove, dishwasher, and iron. Consider using an outdoor grill for cooking. Lights also produce heat, so switch them off if they are not in use.

If you feel too hot, take a cold shower and wear a cool, wet towel around your neck to help keep your body temperature down. When you take a shower, don’t dry your hair since the wet hair also helps to keep you cool.

Explore Your Options

Now that you are doing your best to keep cool, consider your options. If you do not have an  air conditioning repair company you trust, it’s time to choose one. It is essential to find a company that is reliable and available to attend to your situation quickly.

Don’t only think about their availability; consider their expertise. Don’t be in a rush to just hire anyone. Do your research to ensure that you are hiring the right team.

Look up companies, check the reviews, and ask people you trust if they have engaged the services of the company you have picked.

Preventing This From Happening in the Future

When the AC emergency is fixed, you may forget about it completely, but that will be a big mistake and a recipe for another AC disappointment. You need to schedule an annual maintenance appointment with an air conditioning installation and repair company. They will be able to spot an impending problem before it becomes a big problem.
